Introduction
The One Collection is a range of blended whiskies, highlighting different cask finishing in different flavour expressions.
Limited to only 2,994 bottles in the UK, this release of The One uses first-fill American oak casks, seasoned with a rare aromatised wine, known as 'Vino de Naranja' from Huelva in Andalucía.
The whisky is non-chill filtered, with only the natural colours derived from the oak casks. The bottling is a singular blend of select grain and malt Scotch whiskies from Speyside and Islay with The Lakes Single Malt at its heart.
On the Nose
Interesting note of grapes, with some orange zest and zingy peel. A slight musty wood note hides in the background.
On the palate
Very sweet on first taste, with a strong caramelised orange peel on the tongue. The whisky has an oily texture with a tropical fruit note finish. It tastes better than I've made it sound!
With water?
Didn't do much for me, slightly brought out the 'spice' of the dram, but possibly due to this being quite an oily whisky, the water drew the oil to the top of the glass.
Conclusion
A very nice whisky, with an interesting finish. I like that this was an experiment using unusual cask finishes, and enjoyed trying it out.
Would I buy again?
I probably would! I'd really like to visit the Lakes distillery, and when I do so, one of these bottles will be on my list to buy (as long as there are bottles left, given its limited distribution!)
