Introduction
A latest addition into the core Ardbeg range, this 5 year old Ardbeg has been matured in ex-bourbon (american oak) and ex-oloroso sherry casks. It is non-chill filtered, and bottled with its natural colour at 47.4% ABV.
On the Nose
This is fresh, whilst also being quite abrupt (you can tell this is a young Single Malt, it hasn't had time to become fully rounded yet).
There's a strong campfire smokiness, and a really interesting fruit note (fresh green fruit like Apple and Pear) with some vanilla.
On the palate
A really pleasurable sweetness, quite a malty undertone with an overtone of light fruitiness, spicy oak, and savoury smoked ham with a peppery finish.
With water?
Personally, I didn't find the need to add water. Having tried it, I have to say I prefer it without (just neat was fine for me).
Conclusion
A simple, young Ardbeg. As an introduction to the Ardbeg range, it does the job. But, if you are a regular drinker of the 10, or our favourite the Uigeadail, then this might not hit the spot for you. You can taste that this is a younger whisky, and the complexity you may love in more distinguished Ardbeg's doesn't quite come through.
Would I buy again?
Personally, I'd rather save my money and invest in a more pricey bottle of Uigeadail. Or the 10 Year Old. But, having said that, I'll keep this bottle for that rare occasion I meet someone who hasn't tried an Ardbeg yet, I bet they'd enjoy it!
