Stauning Danish Rye Whisky

Stauning Danish Rye Whisky

Introduction

A Danish take on Rye Whisky (using both rye and barley grains), which are entirely floor-malted at the distillery. Using unforgiving open-fired stills to distil the liquid, the spirit is then matured in new American oak barrels. Interestingly for me living Near Edinburgh, Stauning sits on the West Coast of Denmark facing the North Sea. If you sailed a boat directly west from there, you would sail directly into the Firth of Forth with Edinburgh on your left!

On the Nose

Very 'berry' forward nose. I got an intense Blackberry jam, smothered on rye bread, some spicy black pepper, a distinctive oak, and fresh mint leaves. Actually, quite a pleasant nose!

On the palate

The oak hit first for me, with some strong vanilla. Then dark berries, some lighter red currants, lemon zest, and cinnamon spice. A satisfyingly long finish, with a nice warming and slightly spicy mouthfeel.

Conclusion

I'm not always a fan of Rye (like the Stork Club Straight Rye Whiskey I wasn't too fond of), but this one I enjoyed! Stauning has made a fantastic Rye here, which is very drinkable and tasty!
