Introduction
The Old Pulteney distillery was founded in 1826. Their single malt is exclusively bourbon-cask matured, and the 12-year-old is known for its balance of creamy cask sweetness and the hallmark maritime salinity. I've never tried it, so here goes...
Ā
On the Nose
Absolutely get a fresh Salty brine straight away, with some plum sweetness, a buttery biscuit-like shortbread, as well as caramel and old leather. A rather interesting nose!
On the palate
Friendly and smooth, with a slightly salty yet bitter start... moving onto fresh citrus with a creamy feel, and finishing with spicy pepper, but also with some contrasting sweet honey. Surprisingly complex for a 12 year old whisky.
Conclusion
An enjoyable dram, and what I tasted was different from the nose, which is always a welcome surprise! It wasn't bland, and even though I was only trying a sample size, it did make me want to have more to try again and again! So, maybe there's a purchase to be made š
