KAVALAN Concertmaster Port Cask Finish

KAVALAN Concertmaster Port Cask Finish

Introduction

Taiwanese whisky has been about since 2008, but the highly-regarded Kavalan whiskies are only much more recently available in Europe! This single malt whisky utilises Ruby Port, Tawny Port and Vintage Port casks from Portugal to finish whiskies that were initially matured in American oak.

This is described as being rich and fruity, with warm spices... so I'm going into this with that in mind.

On the Nose

Initially a very strong nose of sweet dark fruits in syrup, almost like opening a can of cherries soaked in golden syrup. The next thing to come to mind is almonds, more specifically marzipan, and that is much stronger on this nose than I've experienced in other port finished whiskies. Red grapes and some blackberry. I think rich and fruity is a good description, to be honest!

On the palate

Smooth, deep bitter fig with pepper, sweetness from brown sugar, with cinnamon and oak. The port actually comes through a bit on the palate. Raisins make an appearance, and weirdly enough, I was left with the mouthfeel of some kind of raspberry or strawberry jam, with the lingering sweetness to suit.

Conclusion

A very tasty dram! It's different, it's rich, and it's complex enough to keep me going back for more and more. A solid whisky, and one I'd be proud to have in my permanent collection!
