Introduction
A rye whisky from High West, this is a blended combination of 2-year-old (so lively and spicy) 95% rye mash bill, with sweeter and more rounded 16-year-old 53% rye mash.
On the Nose
Star anise, liquorice, and some caramel. An interesting sweetness from cherry and orange, with some light citrus grapefruit. Some other herbs in the background, but nothing I could pick out specifically.
On the palate
Very herd forward, with Rosemary and dill. The liquorice is still there, with the orange, but joined by some cocoa and cinnamon.
Conclusion
Complex, tasty and rye that actually takes time to explore. Lots going on in this one, and from someone who doesn't even like Liquorice, this was a pleasant surprise! Very enjoyable Rye.
