Glenallachie 12 Years Old

Introduction

Glenallachie is an independent, Scottish owned and managed whisky company. They pride themselves on not being part of a 'bigger corporate machine', and that they are empowered to make their own decisions and make the kinds of whisky they believe in.

The 12 year old is at the core of the Glenallachie range, and is bottled at 46%, non chill filtered and with its natural colour.

On the Nose

A lovely toasted oak, with a fresh tropical fruit note. If you live in the UK, then look for the scent of haribo sweets... it's in there, and once I recognise what I was smelling, I couldn't get away from it!

On the palate

A recognisable vanilla from the oak, and some dark chocolate. A very lively fresh ginger and blackberry comes out as you taste, which is a pleasant contrast to the vanilla.

With water?

The 46% is fine for me. I added a couple of drops to my dram and didn't care for the change. As a neat 46% whisky, this is smooth and doesn't need any help!

Conclusion

A great 12 year old core Glenallachie. It won't blow your socks off, and the tasting is a predictable journey for a 12 year old speyside scotch.

Would I buy again?

I would if the price was right, but to be honest, there are a lot more interesting expressions of Speyside scotch I'd love to try before sticking to the more predictable tastes of this Glenallachie. That being said, if you were to enjoy this, it could become one of your 'regular sipper' whiskies. Just not for me.
