Deanston 23 Years Old Oloroso Matured

Introduction

This Deanston Distillery Exclusive bottling has spent 23 years in Oloroso sherry casks, having been distilled in 1995. This Deanston is a limited release, with just 1473 bottles produced.

On the Nose

A very inviting nose for lovers of Sherry influenced whisky. Not ‘dark’ on the nose at all, but light and fresh with plums, raisins, warm sticky toffee pudding and oak.

On the palate

Wow. A complex first mouthful. Initially sweet with honey, toffee (this time hard toffee that you’d break with a toffee hammer, not spongy sticky toffee pudding like the nose). Towards the end of the taste, there is a lot of oak-wood lingering on the tongue, and some very subtle Christmas spice on the finish.

Conclusion

A fantastic Sherry influenced single malt. This bottle is relatively pricey at around ~£150 (at time of writing), but worth every penny in my opinion. 23 years of maturation in Oloroso sherry casks had done some fantastic things. I really enjoy drinking this whisky, and will likely save it for special occasions when not any normal dram will do!

Would I buy again?

At £150, this isn't a whisky you'd buy multiple times a year (even though the price is reasonable given its 23 years of maturation in oloroso casks). That being said, this whisky was well worth the money and if I had unlimited whisky funds, I’d defiantly be restocking the collection with this whisky once it’s done. However, being limited to just 1473 bottles, it might not be the easiest to source in a few years time... so if you are thinking of trying out this whisky, don't leave it too late!
